Biomass Plant About to Reach Full Capacity

A little more than two years ago, officals in Jackson County, Florida welcomed the world's largest wood pellet plant to the town of Cottondale. Since then, Green Circle Bio Energy has been busy establishing its manufacturing operation, with its unique production of wood pellets as a cleaner fuel for power plants. The plant is now almost at full capacity and the finished pellets are taken by train to the Port of Panama City where they will be shipped overseas to be used as coal substitutes in European power plants. New Bill Cuts Renewable Energy Loan Guarantees

The US renewable energy industry has warned it could be severely affected unless the administration acts urgently to restore $1.5bn of renewable energy loan guarantees that have been diverted in the emergency funding bill to cover Medicaid payments and teachers' salaries. This is the second time the loan guarantee scheme has been raided, as $2bn was diverted in August 2009 to help pay for the government's popular "cash-for-clunkers" scheme. Renewable energy groups warn the move would "jeopardize the renewable energy industries' efforts to develop clean electric generation and create tens of thousands of jobs". Source: Clean Skies News

High in the Peruvian Andes, in a house made of mud and straw, the Quispe family live in a single room. In addition to freezing winters and summer droughts, the family contends with a complete lack of sanitation, running water or electricity. In these remote villages, electricity is essential for development, but a household solar system with battery storage can easily provide enough electricity to power two lights and a radio. This video shows how the Quispe family's life has changed since electricity came to their home via a solar panel, installed with the help of UK-based charity Practical Action. Wood Pellet Plant set to bring New Jobs

A new wood pellet plant is set to bring additional jobs to Jasper County, SC. US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has released a report which provides a roadmap on how America can meet the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2). All regions can contribute to meeting America's long term energy needs. Secretary Vilsack commented: "Energy derived from woody biomass, switchgrass and other sources has enormous potential benefits for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing clean, home-grown energy, and providing economic opportunities for rural America. Markets for woody biomass can also bolster forest restoration activities on both public and private lands, improving the ecological health of our forests and reducing the impacts of global climate change."
